What it is
A probiotic strain is a specific, genetically defined variant of a beneficial microorganism, identified by three levels: genus, species, and strain designation — for example, Lactobacillus (genus) rhamnosus (species) GG (strain). The strain is the most precise level, and it's the one that actually matters for what a probiotic does.
What it does
- Defines the specific effect. Health benefits demonstrated in research apply to the exact strain tested — not to the species as a whole, and definitely not to "probiotics" in general.
- Lets you match a product to evidence. If a study found a benefit from a named strain, you can look for that same strain designation on a label.
- Distinguishes otherwise similar microbes. Two strains of the same species can behave quite differently in the body.
What it does NOT do
- A benefit shown for one strain does not transfer to another — even within the same species. "Contains Lactobacillus" tells you very little.
- The strain name doesn't tell you the dose. You still need the CFU count (and its viability through expiration).
- "More strains" isn't automatically better. A multi-strain "complex" isn't superior just for having a long list; what matters is whether the specific strains have evidence for your goal.
Forms and how to use it
- Look for full strain-level labeling (genus + species + strain code), not just a genus or a marketing name.
- Match the named strain to the one used in research for your intended benefit.
- Pair strain identity with a meaningful CFU count guaranteed through the expiration date.
