What it is
Bioavailability is the proportion of a nutrient or compound that actually reaches your bloodstream in an active form after you take it — not just the amount printed on the label. If a capsule contains 500 mg of an ingredient but your body only absorbs and uses 100 mg, its bioavailability is low. The label tells you the dose; bioavailability tells you the delivered dose.
What it does
Bioavailability determines how much of a supplement is genuinely available to do its job. It's shaped by several things:
- The chemical form. Different salts or complexes of the same nutrient absorb differently (for example, some magnesium and iron forms are absorbed better than others).
- Whether you take it with food. Fat-soluble nutrients (vitamins A, D, E, K) absorb far better with a meal containing fat.
- Formulation. Particle size, coatings, and added "enhancers" can raise or lower absorption.
- Your own body. Age, gut health, and other nutrients present at the same time all matter.
Because of this, a smaller dose in a well-absorbed form can outperform a larger dose in a poorly-absorbed one.
What it does NOT do
- It is not the same as the label amount. "1,000 mg" says nothing about how much you'll absorb.
- Higher bioavailability doesn't automatically mean "better" or "more effective" — more absorption of something you don't need isn't a benefit, and can even push you toward an upper limit faster.
- A brand claiming "superior absorption" hasn't necessarily proven a clinical advantage; better absorption on paper doesn't always translate to a difference you'd feel. Treat bold absorption claims skeptically unless there's evidence behind them.
Forms and how to use the concept
- When comparing two products, look at the form of the active ingredient and the elemental/standardized amount, not just the headline milligrams.
- Follow "take with food" guidance where it applies — it's often a bigger lever on real absorption than the brand or the dose.
- Be wary of proprietary "absorption technology" claims that aren't backed by data.
